Monday Marketing Tip: Using Hashtags In Social Media Marketing
What are hashtags? In short hashtags are a way to organize, connect and promote digital content. Increasing engagement for your brand with hashtags is a no-brainer.
Have you created a branded hashtag for your business? Using a branded hashtag for your business is a great way for you and others to tag your business directly to get more exposer across social media platforms.
Create your branded hashtag for your business if you have not already. Many use their business name as their branded hashtag. If you decide not to use your business name, make sure the hashtag is extremely specific to your brand. Example: my branded hashtag is #morgandaydesigns
So, you may be asking yourself “do all social media platforms use hashtags”? Hashtags where first used on Twitter, and then followed other platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more. We are going to talk about Facebook and Instagram because these are two of the biggest platforms that I use.
Facebook – When using hashtags on Facebook you will want to pick 1-3 hashtags and make sure that the hashtags you choose are relevant to your business and/or to your post. Using the wrong hashtags is not going to gain your business any visibility or increase your overall reach.
Instagram – When using hashtags on Instagram your allowed up to 30 hashtags. I always try to use up as many of those 30 as possible to increase engagement and maximize reach. You might be thinking “wow! that’s a lot of hashtags to pick”. It is not hard, start by using your branded hashtag that you have created for your business. Then think of at least 15 words or short phrases that is related to your niche.
For example, if you make things with your cricut or silhouette machines you’ll want to use these hashtags that are related to that particular niche such as: #cricutcrafts #silhouettecameo #creativecrafting #diycrafts #vinydecals #shirtdesign #craftingmom #momprenuer #craftersofinstagram #smallbusiness #creativebusiness #businessowner #creativebusiness
*Pro-Tip – set aside 30 minutes and write down all the hashtags you can think of that is related to your niche, fill up a sheet of notebook paper. Now when your ready to use your hashtags you can easily go to this list you made and choose some hashtags to use for each of your post. Mix up the hashtags each time you so a new post to social media. You can eve go a lot further with creating a spread sheet and keep track of which hashtags are performing the best for your business. After a few months of study go back to your notebook paper and add more hashtags to test and or make note of the ones that have not performed as well as others.
